UK Government e-Petition

When Parliament debated UK firearms law in 2010, it was acknowledged on both sides of the House that the pistol shooting bans had been ineffective against "gun crime", which is mostly gang and drug-based. Unfortunately the current restrictions were created by someone who was told to generate a law to deal with something they obviously did not understand. Correction of this law will allow the shooters that represent our country to actually train in this country instead of having to go to Europe giving other countries the competitive advantage. This will also allow replacement competitors to be trained in their clubs. There are currently 2 petitions on the HM Government web site requesting the current laws be changed.

Carbine & Benchrest Section Meeting 05/02/11

A meeting of all Carbine & Benchrest section members was called to discuss & agree changes on the running of both the range & the carbine section.

In this meeting it was confirmed that if the designated range officer is not present at the club, during published hours when members who do not have FAC's could be present, then there will be no shooting allowed. This will be the case even if a building key holder is present.

There are currently 76 full members shooting Rimfire, it is a condition of becoming a full member of the club that you have gained enough knowledge to become an assistant RO and average you will be expected to be a Range Officer once every three months.

There is an understanding that if work, ill health or other personal reasons are given to your shooting discipline manager, then they can do a work around. This would mean that instead of being an RO throughout the year, another activity could be completed in its place. This could be cutting the grass, picking up litter, general tidy ups, making target frames, scoring, taking part in open days or any other jobs that a membership run club needs to survive and look good.

All RO's are asked to complete the NSRA Range Conducting Officer training which can be arranged with Glynn Jones, this will confirm that you have the correct skills, knowledge and are fully aware of your responsibilities

Please advise your shooting discipline manager when you are available to be an RO or advise them what you are willing to do instead. There are RO calendars on both the Carbine and prone notice boards, but do ensure you advise your discipline manager as well.  On membership renewal, the Shooting Discipline Manager will be asked for his reference regarding the renewal, if you have not taken part in activities to support the club you will be asked to apply elsewhere.

The above relates to the published shooting dates and times for weekday evenings and weekends. It does not reflect on the long established club principle that two FAC holding full members can shoot on the outside range outside these times by taking turns in performing the RO duty.

2011 AGM

The clubs annual general meeting is currently planned for Tuesday 13th December at 19.30 among the items to be discussed will be membership fees and revisions of the club's constitution, you may access the current version by clicking <here> (requires PDF reader which is downloadable free from Adobe)

Auditor

The club would like to enlist the services of a certified accountant to audit the clubs end of year accounts, if you know of someone who would be able to / would be willing to perform this work we would be grateful to hear from you. Please contact the chairman in the first instance.

CLUB FLEECES

Fleeces with the original club logo are now available for order (examples on the notice board in the club house). Please contact the social secretary for additional details

NEW RANGE LOCKS

The door locks to the range were replaced after the AGM, keys will only be issued to range officers & section managers. Anyone discovered lending a key to a probationary / non member, allowing a copy to be made from their key without prior authorisation from the Club Secretary will immediately forfeit their membership of the club. The codes for the main gate & air range will be changed at the end of February each year, any member discovered to be issuing access codes to non members will immediately forfeit their membership of the club

Hours of cover & firing point usage

Full members are welcome to attend outside of these hours but they must provide their own equipment and Range Officer

Monday - Prone & Benchrest 50 yards 7pm-9pm (last detail 8.30)                                      Tuesday Carbine & Benchrest 50 yards 7pm-9pm (last detail 8.30)                                  Wednesday - Carbine & Benchrest Trainee's 25 yards 7pm-9pm (last detail 8.30)                Thursday - Leeds University exclusive range usage                                                                      Friday - Prone training 7pm-9pm 50 yards (last detail 8.30)                                                         Saturday - Carbine & Benchrest trainee's 25 yards 10am - 3pm (last detail 2.30pm)                 Sunday - Prone & Benchrest 50 yards 10am - 3pm (last detail 2.30pm)

At busy times each detail will last 20 minutes at which time the range officer will order that all shooting ceases. All shooters must be seen to make safe then clear all empty shells before leaving the firing point to recover targets, at this time targets can be changed, additional ammunition can be purchased and the range officer will verify those persons wishing to attend the next detail.

Range officers must be full members of the club.

All members are reminded that they agreed to take part in the upkeep of the club when completing and signing the membership application forms. Any members who do not assist with required works will have their membership reviewed by the committee at the end of the season. Sanctions that could be applied range from sharply increased membership rates to expulsion.

Range Safety

Due to the increased angle available when shooting from 50 yards, all members must ensure that shooters do not close the bolt on their rifle until it is in the horizontal position and they are ready to take a shot.

All new members must be certified as being safe (consistently placing all rounds in the black portion of the target) prior to being allowed to shoot at 50 yards.

Pistols have a much increased danger angle and are therefore restricted to lanes 3 & 4 at the 25 yard point.

Anyone person found not complying with range safety rules will be immediately removed from the firing point, any Range Officer not enforcing these rules should be reported to the committee so that disciplinary action can be taken

Procedure for dealing with misfires

1) After the "click" hold the rifle in the horizontal position for 30 seconds whilst continuing to point the barrel at the target.                                                                                                                                                                  2) Notify the range officer that you have an issue.                                                                                                    3) Whilst continuing to point the barrel at the target, move your head from the rear of the firearm and proceed to open the bolt with the left hand (right hard for left handed rifles), this will protect your face with your hand should the round decide to go off as the pressure is released & the bolt flies back.                                                                               4) Extract and inspect the cartridge for damage (this can indicate if you have an issue with the loading of the cartridge, the most likely option or possibly your firing pin).                                                                                                      5) Hand the round to the range officer for disposal and continue with the detail.
